What Happens to Your CRB After You Repay a Loan in Kenya?
Updated April 2026 • 6 min read
Two Different Scenarios: Regular Repayment vs Clearing a Default
What happens to your CRB file after repayment depends on what type of loan was repaid:
- Scenario A: You fully repay a loan that was always current (no missed payments)
- Scenario B: You clear/settle a loan that was in default or listed as NPL
The outcome is quite different in each case.
Scenario A: Fully Repaid — Always Current Loan
If you complete repayment of a loan that was always paid on time:
- The account status changes to "Closed / Paid in Full"
- The entire repayment history (all positive entries) remains on your file for the foreseeable future
- This is a positive item — the record of consistent repayments continues to help your credit score even after the account is closed
- Your outstanding balance drops to KES 0, improving your credit utilisation ratio
- The closed account contributes to your average account age (positive)
Net effect: Your credit score improves or remains strong.
Scenario B: Settling a Defaulted / NPL Loan
If you clear an overdue loan that was listed as Non-Performing (NPL) or in default:
- The lender is required to notify the CRB of the settlement
- The account status changes from "Default / NPL" to "Settled / Paid"
- The historical negative entry still remains on your file for the balance of the 5-year period from the original NPL date
- However, the status change to "Settled" is treated much more favourably by lenders than an active default
- Many lenders will approve credit for applicants with settled (not active) listings
Net effect: Your credit situation improves significantly, but the historical record is not immediately erased.
How Long Does It Take for the Update to Show?
| Loan Type | Typical Bureau Update Timeline |
|---|---|
| M-Shwari / Fuliza / KCB M-Pesa | Usually within 24–72 hours (automated reporting) |
| Tala / Branch / Digital lenders | 3–7 business days |
| Bank loans (settlement of default) | 7–30 days depending on the bank's internal processes |
| SACCO loans | 7–30 days |
| HELB | Can take up to 60 days after payment is confirmed |
After making repayment, wait the expected period and then run your CRB report to confirm the update has been made.
What to Do If Your File Hasn't Been Updated
If you repaid a loan but your CRB status hasn't changed within the expected timeframe:
- Gather your payment proof (M-Pesa transaction code, bank receipt, lender confirmation)
- Contact the lender directly (not the bureau — the lender must submit the update)
- Request written confirmation that they have notified the bureau
- If the lender fails to update within 7 days of your request, file a dispute with the CRB
- Escalate to CBK if unresolved within 30 days: complaints@centralbank.go.ke
After Settling: Your Next Steps Towards Credit Recovery
- Run your CRB report to confirm the "Settled" status is showing
- Start building new positive repayment history through small loans repaid on time
- Track the 5-year expiry date of the historical entry
- When applying for new credit, be prepared to explain the settled entry if asked
- Many lenders appreciate a clear explanation: "I had a KES X default with [lender] which was fully settled on [date]" — transparency builds trust
