How to Clear a Negative CRB Listing in Kenya
March 22, 2026 • 7 min read
Step 1: Find Out What Is Listed Against You
Before you can clear a CRB listing, you need to know exactly what is there. Check your CRB report to identify:
- Which lender(s) have listed you
- The amount outstanding
- The date the loan was taken and defaulted
- Whether the listing is accurate or an error
If you have not yet checked your report, get your CRB report here — results in minutes via M-Pesa.
Step 2: Contact the Lender Directly
The CRB itself does not have power to remove a listing — only the lender who submitted it can instruct the CRB to update or remove the record. Contact the lender (bank, digital app, SACCO, etc.) and:
- Confirm the outstanding balance (including any interest and penalties)
- Request a formal letter or statement showing the exact amount required to settle
- Negotiate a settlement if the amount has grown significantly due to interest
Some lenders offer settlement discounts for old debts, especially if the loan has been written off. Always negotiate in writing (email or formal letter), not just verbally.
Step 3: Repay the Outstanding Amount
Once you have the settlement figure, make the payment through the lender's official payment channels. Always:
- Keep your M-Pesa confirmation message or bank transfer receipt
- Request written confirmation of the settlement from the lender
- Ask the lender to issue a CRB clearance letter — a formal document confirming the debt is settled and instructing the CRB to update your record
Step 4: The Lender Updates the CRB Record
After settlement, the lender is legally required to:
- Update your loan record from "Non-Performing" to "Settled" or "Closed" in the CRB system
- This update should happen within 30 days of payment under CBK regulations
- The negative listing is not necessarily removed immediately — it may show as "settled" with the default history still visible
Under the Credit Reference Bureau Regulations 2020 (Amendment), settled negative listings are supposed to be suppressed from lender view after a stipulated period. The exact treatment depends on the type of loan and bureau.
Step 5: Verify the Update on Your CRB Report
After 30 days, check your CRB report again to confirm the listing has been updated. If it has not changed, follow up with the lender and, if necessary, escalate to the CRB directly using your settlement letter as evidence.
How Long Does a Negative Listing Last After Settlement?
Kenya's CRB regulations have evolved on this point. Currently:
- A settled account may still show the payment history (including past late payments) for years
- Active defaults (unsettled) remain visible indefinitely until resolved
- Following the 2020 digital lending regulation reforms, many short-term defaulters who settled benefited from data suppression
- The CBK has periodically directed CRBs to delete certain categories of negative data (e.g. the 2020 Covid-19 relief measures)

What if the Listing is an Error?
If the CRB listing is wrong (e.g. it belongs to someone else, you repaid but were still listed, or the amount is incorrect), you can raise a formal dispute. See: How to Dispute a Wrong CRB Listing in Kenya.
Warning: CRB Clearance Scams
Do not pay anyone on WhatsApp, social media or via M-Pesa who claims they can "clear your CRB" without you repaying the debt. This is illegal and is one of the most common financial scams in Kenya. Only the original lender can update your CRB record — after you have fully repaid or settled the debt.
