Credit Repair in Kenya: A Step-by-Step Recovery Plan
Updated April 2026 • 8 min read
The Reality of Credit Repair in Kenya
You cannot pay someone to remove a legitimate negative CRB listing. Despite what scammers promise, only erroneous data can be removed early. What you can do is a structured, legal repair process that reduces the practical impact of negative listings and rebuilds your creditworthiness over time.
Fraud Warning: Anyone who promises to "remove" a valid CRB listing for a fee is committing fraud. Do not pay such individuals — you will lose your money and your listing will remain.
Phase 1: Know Where You Stand (Week 1)
- Get your CRB report from all three bureaus if possible (TransUnion Kenya, Metropol, Creditinfo Kenya)
- List every negative entry: lender name, amount owed, date listed, current status
- Identify which listings are accurate and which may be erroneous
- Note the "Date Listed" on each — calculate when the 5-year retention window expires
Phase 2: Dispute Errors Immediately (Week 1–4)
For any listing you believe is inaccurate (wrong amount, already-paid, wrong identity):
- Gather evidence (payment receipts, bank statements, loan agreements)
- Contact the submitting lender in writing first
- If no response in 7 days, escalate to the CRB's disputes department
- Bureau must resolve within 30 days under the CRB Regulations

Phase 3: Settle Outstanding Debts (Month 1–6)
For accurate negative listings, the only path is to repay the underlying debt:
- Prioritise smallest balances first — quick wins improve morale and reduce the number of negative entries
- Contact lenders directly and negotiate — many will accept reduced settlement amounts or payment plans for old debts
- Get written confirmation of settlement from the lender before paying
- After payment, confirm the lender has updated the bureau (follow up in writing)
- The listing status changes from "Default" to "Settled" — still on record but treated more favourably
Phase 4: Rebuild Positive History (Month 3 Onwards)
Even while negative listings exist, start building positive data in parallel:
- Open or reactivate a bank account and use it actively
- Join a SACCO — they are often more willing to lend to members with historical issues
- Start with M-Shwari savings and timely small loan repayments
- Every on-time repayment adds a positive trade line that counterbalances the negatives
Credit Repair Timeline Realistic Estimates
| Timeline | Milestone |
|---|---|
| 30 days | All erroneous listings disputed and (hopefully) corrected |
| 3–6 months | Outstanding debts settled; statuses changed to "Settled" |
| 6–12 months | Positive payment history accumulating alongside settled negatives |
| 1–2 years | Credit score improving; access to some loan products returning |
| 5 years from listing date | Negative entries auto-removed; fully clean credit file |
Things That Do NOT Help Credit Repair
- Paying "CRB cleaners" or agents who promise magical removal
- Applying for many new loans hoping one will be approved (each application adds a hard inquiry)
- Ignoring the listed debts and hoping the 5-year period passes quietly — settling debts is always better
- Opening fraudulent accounts or using someone else's identity
